Values: Building a Better World for All

by Mark Carney

Hosted by: Tim - I love nature, tropical fruits and learning how our world works.

Non-fiction economics/politics (608 pages, 20 hours and 19 minutes on Audio)

Description: This is the book that many Canadians have been awaiting. A bold and urgent argument by economist and former bank governor Mark Carney on the radical, foundational change that is required if we are to build an economy and society based not on market values but on human values.

Our world is full of fault lines--growing inequality in income and opportunity; systemic racism; health and economic crises from a global pandemic; mistrust of experts; the existential threat of climate change; deep threats to employment in a digital economy with robotics on the rise. These problems and others like them, argues Carney, stem from a common crisis in values.

Carney offers a vision of a more humane society and a practical manifesto for getting there. How we reform our infrastructure to make things better and fairer is at the heart of every chapter, with outlines of wholly new ideas that can restructure society and enshrine our human values at the core of all that we build for our children and grandchildren.

Intent of session: Explore Carney's examination of economic and philosophical history, his diagnosis of the state of markets and the organization of our economies, as well as his proposals on how we move forward; hear out each other's critiques and ideas to explore how to steer economies towards outcomes that prioritize the wellbeing of people and our planet.
