In a world shouting an ethic of self-centeredness, "what's in it for me?" thinking, and a vision of life focused on personal achievements, David Brooks' Second Mountain sings a different song to the soul—one that calls us to a life of service focused on others, outside of our ego-dramas. But this book is more than just another call for egalitarian thinking and living. Brooks models for us lives of service, purpose and mission by sharing incredible stories of people making a real difference in the world around them. Importantly, he shows how these individuals "radiate an inner light" with a joy that no me-first lifestyle can provide, and tells us how to be like them. How do you live for a cause bigger than yourself? Second Mountain begins to offer answers.
Intent of Session:
My hope with this session is for all of us to reflect intently and honestly (even when it makes us uncomfortable!) about how much our own lives are focused on ourselves rather than the good we offer the world around us. How much do we live with love of neighbour, and act on it? To what extent are we on the first mountain in Brooks' metaphor, or the second? And if we want to get on the second, how can we get there? My hope is for this to feel like a mini-retreat, a conversation about our purpose with fellow readers who want lives that are more communitarian, more outward, more a gift for others, than they are now.
